Cool beans!

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

We finally got round to watching Speed Racer a couple of nights ago. I have to admit, when I originally saw the trailers – they didn’t interest me at all. I quite liked what the Wachowski’s did with V for Vendetta, thought it looked like they’d lost the plot with this release.

As far as the story goes, it’s not the most developed of plots, and the characters are all pretty 2-dimensional. In fact there are plenty of negative reviews on-line for this film (rottentomatoes = 36%, IMDB = 6.5) and I probably wouldn’t have bothered if not for reading the reviews posted on boltcity and radiomaru. It’s not surprising that the 2 positive reviews I read for this film were written by illustrators, this film is indeed a visual feast! And the whole film reads like a comic book borrowing story telling devices from manga (all it’s missing is a blook gushing nose), and fusing film with animation resulting in a distinct, yet usual blend. A must, even if solely for the visuals.

I’m gonna go watch the Special Features…

Hourly Comic Day!

Thursday, January 29th, 2009
Hourly comic day is almost upon us. And this year it lands on a Sunday! I’d heard about 24 hour comic day via Scott McClouds books (can’t remember which one…) which sounds a bit too much like hard work. I think I’ll wait until I’ve built up my comic-ing stamina before attempting that challenge. The Hourly comic however is new to me, and sounds more feasable. Follow the link and join in! Or you can read about other people’s Sundays through their comics in the forum:

Name change

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Decided to change the name of the webcomic. The strips seemed to focus on me and Criss more so than the village. Welcome to the Ste-Regular. Any thoughts?

“Other Comics” page up!

Other Comics Page

Added a page for my other comics! Only a couple on there at the moment. The comic I drew for Hourly Comic Day can be found over there if you missed it first time round. Had a couple of chaotic weekends recently meaning only being able to update once a week, hopefully get it back to twice a week from Monday.

It is indeed back online now (as you can see) and will have a new strip up before the week is out. In other news, currently getting some quotes on a printed volume of The Ste-Regular! Stay tooned.

I’m sure it’s been said many a time already, but here’s to the next 200 Marc!

Thought Bubble 2009

Swag!

Currently working my way through all the books I bought at this years con… Highlights so far being Monsieur Cadwell’s Glastonbury postcard book, Chloe Noonan #2 (Marc Ellerby) and Greasy Joe (M. D. Penman)

We also had BIG FUN on the train finding things in ‘Intricate Dwellings’ by Philippa Rice (you can buy it here)

I’m sure there are some more gems in here, just need to find the time to READ THEM ALL!

Font Shopping 2010

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Fonts!
New Years day morning brought no hangover this year, but instead… Font shopping. I took advantage of Comicraft’s 24 hour sale where all fonts prices plummeted to an affordable $20.10!

Picked up a nice slender number I thought may come in useful for those teeny speech balloons – goes by the name of ‘CREDIT CRUNCH’ also bought ‘BIFFBAMBOOM’ which I believe speaks for itself… Along with ‘SHOUTOUT’ for those balloons which just need that extra bit of volume.

Look out for them in this years strips!

Hourly Comic Day 2010

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010
Yesterday was hourly comic day! Last year was pretty straight forward (falling on a Sunday) which was good for me, being my first attempt.

This year I was thrown in head first, being a work day… Juggling my day job and my comics isn’t out of the ordinary by any means; but drawing a new panel EVERY HOUR, combined with running the post office and shop is a tad more complicated, yet somehow refreshing!

You can read my attempt here!

Illustration Friday – Adrift

Monday, February 15th, 2010

My attempt at “Adrift” for Illustration Friday.

The shop was pretty quiet this morning, so I had a couple of hours to kill. Photoshop and mouse.
